The Kansas Department of Health and Environment
(KDHE) has been awarded a nearly $3 million Lead Hazard Control
grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
(HUD) to administer the program Project Lead- Safe KCK in Wyandotte
County.
The goals of program include reducing lead hazards
in homes built before 1978, identifying children who have lead
poisoning, providing training for lead abatement contractors, increasing
the community's capacity to address lead-based paint hazards, and
increasing community education about lead.

area’s median income. At least half of the units must
be occupied by or made available to families with incomes

For at least 3 years following any lead hazard
work on your rental property, you agree to give priority
to families with a child under 6 years of age. |
Priority will be given to housing units with children
who have elevated blood lead levels and low-income families.

What services could this program provide for my
property?
The Project Lead Safe KCK program can assist you
with "Free" stabilization of surfaces containing lead-based
paint in order to prevent lead poisoning in young children. A state-licensed
risk assessor will determine the services needed to stabilize the
lead-based paint in your property. Types of work may include specialized
cleaning, wet scraping and repainting, replacement, encapsulation,
or enclosure. State-licensed lead abatement contractors will perform

What kind of training is available for contractors?
A limited number of training positions are available
to learn the skills required to assess, supervise or remove lead-based
paint products. The names of the trainings are Lead Abatement Worker,
Lead Abatement Supervisor, and Lead Safe Work Practices. These
skills trainings will qualify individuals to work or bid on lead-based
paint abatement projects in the Kansas City, Kansas area.

What do I do to get my child tested for lead?
Call your doctor or clinic. If you do not have a
doctor, call the Health Department at 913-573-6780.
How do I determine when my home was built?
If you need proof of when your home was built, please
contact the Wyandotte County Appraiser's Office at 9400 State Avenue.
The phone number is 913-287-2641 . Just ask for a printout
showing the year the house was built. There is no cost to obtain
this printout, which may also serve as proof of ownership.
Where do I go for proof of home ownership?
If you want to obtain a copy of your most recent
property tax statement to submit as proof of ownership, please
contact the Wyandotte County Treasurer at 913-573-2823. There is
no charge to obtain this record.
